How to Personalize Curtains

Window treatments are usually one of the largest expenses a homemaker can make in their new place. You want to dress your windows up but yet also probably don’t want to break the bank in doing so. There is always the option of making curtains yourself, but sometimes that’s very time consuming. If you can master straight sewing (which is simply putting two pieces of material together and sewing straight along the edges), there are several ways you can personalize curtains for your windows. They will still be inexpensive enough that it won’t break the bank and easy enough where it won’t take too long to do. Here are a few ideas.
Add Unique Tie-Backs
Find a neutral curtain that matches your decor and simply add a unique tie-back that coordinates. The tie-back could be a string of beads, couple strings of pearls you no longer wear, ribbons, favorite scarves, or even another piece of material that matches your furniture.
Sew a Border
This is a great trick for making inexpensive curtains. Purchase a pair of curtains or drapes you like that don’t go all the way down to the floor. These will be cheaper than premade long curtains. Measure the distance from the bottom of the store bought curtains to the floor, and add a couple inches for sewing. Then, cut out a piece of material and attach it to the store bought curtain. Use a piece of material that matches your furniture, or is otherwise complimentary. Another trick is to purchase material that is an exact match for your couch or chair, as many manufacturers have it available at the larger sewing stores.
Stencil
Stenciling isn’t just for walls! Get fabric stencil paint from the local craft store, a stencil pattern that will work with your decor, and create away! Your curtain will be unique and fun (depending on which stencil you choose.)
